Coaching vs Counselling- Which one? - What are they?

Coaching vs Counselling- Which one? - What are they?

Depending on who you ask or where you look, you'll likely discover a wide range of responses to this topic; also, there might be those who will disagree with my viewpoint.

Keeping things straightforward, which I enjoy doing, and based on my experience:

Coaching typically focusses on where you are now, what you want to change or accomplish, how you're going to get there, the behaviour you want to modify, and the steps you need to take to get there.

In contrast, the Counselling process focuses more on the present, investigating ideas and emotions and figuring out how they might have evolved over time.

Good coaching takes into account the ideas, emotions, sense of self, and history that frequently obstruct our ability to go towards our goals or simply to appreciate the present moment. One example of how these elements can be combined is Neuro Linguistic programming.

Furthermore, successful counselling aids clients in experimenting with new behaviours and striving for alternative goals by exploring not only the client's imagined future but also their history and present. Cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT, is a great method to handle this.

Therefore, I believe that when these processes are carried out effectively, they are based on the following principles:

● Increasing self-awareness;

● Talking things through;

● Investigating and questioning preconceived notions about oneself, others, and the world;

● Remaining open to the possibility of change;

● Accepting oneself and the world as it is, to the extent that it is beneficial and healthy; and making (different) decisions for the rest of our lives.

For this reason, I provide coaching and counselling individually upon request from clients; however, I primarily practise integrated therapy, combining my knowledge, expertise, and experience in both fields to assist individuals in addressing any issues they may need or wish to address in the past, present, or future.

WHICH TOPICS CAN I RECEIVE COACHING OR COUNSELLING ON?

Together, we can cover a vast spectrum. In my experience, the following subjects frequently come up, even if they aren't necessarily recognised right away as important areas of focus:.

● Clarity on what to do in life

● Changing career

● Organisational and Individual Resilience Strategy

● Coping with Divorce and separation

● Making a large, life-changing decision

● Teens migration and challenges

● Coping with care-leavers

● Building my confidence

● Starting on or progressing up the career ladder

● Estranged overseas relationship

● Motivation, procrastination

● Finding purpose

● Work-life balance

● Starting a family

● Being a better.... (fill in the gap)

● Improving confidence or self-esteem

● Coping with loss, disappointment, shame, or change

● Improving relationships

● Improving communication, assertiveness, and boundary-setting

● Conflict resolution

● Understanding yourself or others better

● Getting out of a rut and figuring out "what next?"

HOW MUCH TIME DOES COACHING AND GUIDANCE LAST?

45 minutes to two hours can be spent on a session. Most clients attend one-hour sessions. Due to the process nature of the work, it is usually beneficial to have three or more sessions, which can occur one to four times a month, depending on the duration of the objective, other obligations, and financial situation.

If asked and if the topic is acceptable, I may perform one or two lengthier one-off sessions.

With that said, a coaching process typically lasts two to twelve months, while some people require more time! There is no perfect timing; it varies based on your situation and is unique to you.

WHY SHOULD I COME TO YOU?

I'll offer a welcoming, supportive, nonjudgmental, and safe atmosphere.

I will provide a safe space for you to work through your priorities, think out loud, and be honest with yourself. In situations where I hear something that appears significant and could require more thought, I'll follow up with inquiries or questions. I'll assist you in identifying your objectives and potential paths to success. I will assist you in developing a clear awareness of your values, skills, needs, limiting or contradictory beliefs, and your options when it is appropriate.

Since each person is unique, you will have the time you require to primarily talk and be listened to. Tell me if you need a challenge or if you handle thought-provoking questions effectively. In my capacity as a coach and a Therapist, I'm flexible and will adjust to your needs.

CAN I RESERVE AN INITIAL MEETING?

Sure you can, You can schedule a complimentary 20-minute introductory session with me using the contact page. By phone or video chat, we hope to learn a little bit about one another and determine whether we're a good fit. Any inquiries you may have concerning me, coaching, or the process itself are welcome.

WHAT IS THE PRICE?

In an effort to make coaching accessible to everyone, regardless of circumstances or income level, I provide a sliding rate. I genuinely think that anyone who is willing to work on themselves can benefit from coaching, and I want to make coaching available to anyone who chooses to pursue it. For students, those with limited incomes, and the unemployed, I hold a few spaces aside; if you have any questions, please contact me.

MUST I CONTINUE USING THE SAME METHOD I START WITH?

We can swap modes of communication if you feel that one method isn't working for you or if your situation changes. Generally, we'll stick to one mode of communication (in-person, video, phone or VoIP, chat, or email). Likewise, we will figure out the best arrangement if certain situations demand it, such as when you must travel for work, and we need to be flexible to make our sessions happen.

HOW AND WHERE DOES IT TAKE PLACE?

Online or in-person: That's up to you!

An introduction session will be via video chat online or via phone call, and if we decide we'd like to work together, I offer coaching online or in person

The important thing is that you have a quiet and safe space where you won't be disturbed and can fully focus.

Upon the conclusion of our contract of agreement, we shall discuss this. A fundamental aspect of our partnership is confidentiality. I take the necessary precautions to safeguard your information and the content of our sessions in compliance with the Data Protection Act.

If I have reasonable suspicions that you or others are not secure, or if I am legally required to do so, I will only violate confidentiality. Still, I would talk to you about it first whenever I could, even in these circumstances.

HAS ANYONE CHECKED YOUR RECORD WITH THE DBS?

Yes, the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), formerly known as the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), has checked me out.

I just had an enhanced check completed, and in order to make it easier for both current and potential employers to conduct additional checks, I have signed up for the DBS update service.

WHAT IF I HAVE TO CANCEL AN APPOINTMENT?

We will cover this in our contract. Usually if you give me more than 24 hours’ notice there will be no charge but less than this means you will be liable to pay the full session fee.
